Dissection Photos

I have taken a look under RoboSapien’s skin to see how this robotic toy works. The following is simply the photos which I took, I’ll add more detail soon.

The quality of some of these pictures is very poor and I will try and takes better ones to replace these, as and when I can be bothered and have the time.

Four screws from the back and his chest and back will come off, careful with the back as the cable for the power switch and speaker needs to be unplugged from the PCB.

Underneath that chest there’s not a lot (potential for adding your own hack). You can see in the centre his microphone used for detecting ‘sharp’ noises such as tapping on his body or clapping.

Within Robosapien’s forearm is the motor which controls his elbow movement and also opens his hand when the elbow is fully rotated. The black piece at the front of the picture actuates the hand when it is pushed by the cam on the right hand side of the image. From the bottom feeds the black cable which feeds power to the motor and carries the data from the button on the end of his finger and also a limit switch located just out of sight in this picture.

Three screws hold the lower torso bodywork on, the top two are covered with small caps but these are easily removed.

The two motors that control Robosapien’s legs are clearly visable in this image. Also in there somewhere is the seventh motor which controls the sideways sway of robosapien which allows him to walk.

Taking the two side panels of his right foot you can see the two-bar link which keeps Robosapien’s feet parallel to the floor whether his foot is infront or behind his body.

Forearm motor
A word of caution, the forearms are actually glued together and some force may be required to seperate the two halfs. I noticed that two locating pins were snapped off while I tried to open it.

Took a while for me to get a decent picture, as I haven’t set up the tripod and don’t know the focal distance at which the macro setting on my camera is. Anyway, this is the underside of the Robosapien control board, as you can see there are solder points designed for us hackers to tap into an i/o line. We can see along the left of the photo the points for right arm and leg. At the bottom left of this picture is the connection to the speaker and the on/off switch. At the top left we see the right shoulder and along the top centre we see the head connection with the LEDs for the eyes and the IR receiver.

This is robosapien’s left forearm opened (although thats his right hand, as I have swapped them).

In order to remove the hand:
first loosen (you do not need to remove it) the screw shown.
Shuffle the plastic retaining piece the screw was holding down such that the metal rod can fall out.
This frees the “actuator” (the black plastic rectangular piece).
You can now remove the hand, be careful when disconnecting the wires that you don’t take the socket with the plug (which it tried to do in my case).
See below for details on replacing the LED.
If you want to switch the left with the right hand repeat the above on the opposite arm but remember which actuator came from which arm (they are specific to the arm, not the hand).
To replace the hand reverse the steps, remember to plug the wires in (they are colour coded AND the PCB has the labels).

How the “actuator” works:
as the forearm is rotated outwards by the motor the cam (the strange shaped wheel attached to the gearbox) pushes the actuator out (away from the elbow) which opens the hand. The hand is sprung such that when the cam moves back the fingers close.

The “grip” of robosapien’s hands are therefore dependent on the spring and not the motor, however if you added a stronger spring (with the intention of increasing the grip) the elbow motor will need to work harder in order to open the hand. As the elbow motor serves two functions it is likely that this would mean that robosapien may not be able to fully extend his arm (and subsequently open his hand).

Right hand
With the hand removed (I wouldn’t reccomend trying this with the hand still attached although it may be possible) you can persuade the black cover off (which holds the LED). It would be possible to replace the LED for one of a different colour, e.g. blue or red. It would be a good idea to try a hyper-bright LED, pity I didn’t have any when I took the photos.

Don’t forget the polarity of the LED (which leg runs to the black lead and which to the red)!

This photo should help understand how the black (LED) retaining piece is held in place. I persuaded (levered) it out with a small screwdriver (1.4mm head) but be careful not to scratch the hand too much (as I did, doh!).

I removed the current LEDs and replaced it with Violet LEDs. Violet was chosen as Maplin didn’t have any Hyper blue, blue, hyper ultra-violet, ultra-violet or hyper violet LEDs in stock (my choice in order of preference), talk about narrowing down the choice a little!

Although this isn’t a “super-bright” or “hyper-bright” LED the output is pretty reasonable, as demonstrated by shining it on the paper.

    I’m going cazy trying to fix my robosapien V1, bur nowhere on the internet I can fin info regarding the problem I have. In the starting up process, it rocks his body and say “nuh-huh” and just stays there. It seems to fail when it tries to walk :(

    Any thoughts?

      I recognise the symptoms but can’t recall any solution.

      If you don’t mind my asking have you tried a fresh set of batteries? It might be there isn’t enough power to drive more than one motor at a time. If Robosapien’s controller can detect this on startup that would explain the “nuh-uh”.

        I have already tried with a fresh set of batteries. All the motors seem to be working but when it tries to move its feet on startup says “nuh-uh” and stops right away. It doesn’t respond to any command on the remote. The sensors on the feet seem to work (it says “ouch”, etc).

    Everything seems to work, but it doesn’t repond to the remote controller. I have taken apart the head and checked the wiring, it seems to be alright. I don’t have the original remote controller, so I’m using a PSP with the remote controller application, so maybe is that?

      Been a long time since I last tinkered with a Robosapien. If I recall you take the front chest and back pieces off to expose the neck. Disconnect the cable which supplies the LED eyes and the IR receiver and then you can remove the head.

        I’m looking at one of mine right now.. Besides the chest & back covers, and disconnecting the top connector on the board, it also requires removing the microphone from the inner chest plate, and all 12 screws (2 on top of each shoulder, 4 in 4 spots on center of chest plate, and 4 more at the bottom of the chest plate/torso. ), WARNING! this will loosen all inner mechanicals holding shoulder motors, and hip swaying motor as well as the neck.) the head itself, on both sides of the head are glued-on (Cyano Acrylic/Crazy Glue) caps, removing them exposes 2 mini Phillips screws. taking a wild stab, as I haven’t gotten that far, but the screws hold two end-caps which hold the visor, and the front & back of the head together.

          Ah yeah, good warning! I had forgotten that the head was held mechanically like that. Taking Robosapien apart is the easy bit, putting him back together is the challenge.

    Just rescued 3- V1’s (X?) from a roadside (tagsale leftovers). 2 had corrosion damage (batteries left in.). just did a ches/back removal on one (obvious Radioshack distrib., metalic green, RS labeling.) I’ve already run across one page with a minor Arduino-Nano mod (arduino Software Serial to the IR In & IR Out pins).. Time to let the old mad doctor have a look under the hood (or, in this case, the back & check covers)
